- Richard Avedon photographed from the 1940's through the present, covering wartime, the civil rights movement, celebrities of the '60's and much more for Harper's Bazaar, Vogue and The New Yorker. He once said "My portraits are more about me than they are about the people I photograph." See also this gallery and this gallery.
- Imogen Cunningham shot fantastic B&W plant studies and portraits. She spent much of her life in the San Francisco Bay Area. See her bio and this gallery
- Ansel Adams is best known for his high-contrast B&W landscapes shot throughout central California. See also the Sierra Club page on Adams, and National Gallery page. He is credited with developing the zone system, a way of considering metering and of calibrating a B&W photographic setup to produce predictable results.
- Robert Mapplethorpe was one of the best-known and most controversial photographers of the 20th century. His studies of male and female nudes and various sexual images often resulted in his work being banned from venues. He once said regarding this, "I donıt like that particular word shocking.ı Iım looking for the unexpected. Iım looking for things Iıve never seen beforeI was in a position to take those pictures. I felt an obligation to do them." See also Monash's essay.
- Edward Weston was a contemporary of Imogen Cunningham and Ansel Adams, and lived in California. See also the Getty page on Weston and this gallery page.
- Frank Andreae
- Dan Burkholder doe sfantastic, ephemeral figure and landscape work.
